When planning your event, finding the right venue and theme are only two parts of the puzzle to planning a spectacular event. From our many years of experience, we’ve noticed that some events have a true “wow factor” that make them stand out among the rest. Events with the “wow factor” capitalize on these three things: 1. Emphasize Architecture When you find your venue, make the most out of it. Instead of working against the natural beauty by pushing a contradictory design, embellish what you are given. Most of the buildings around DC are historic and the original designs are beautiful. Use the unique architecture to your advantage and incorporate it into your design and theme. 2. Dramatic Lighting One of the best ways to emphasize the architecture – from ornate colonnades to intricate crown molding – is to use dramatic lighting. The lighting will create dimension with the shadows and make the room or area look even grander and more luxurious. Plus, lighting is the cherry on top to pulling together a theme or style. 3. Creative Menu & Plating We can all probably admit that one of the most anticipated parts of a party is the food. Who doesn’t love an artfully crafted savory hors d’oeuvre or a picture worthy (and equally delicious) dessert? One of the best ways to impress your guests is through their taste buds. Work with your planner to pick a unique (yet appealing) menu that fits in with your overall style and theme, and go for a presentation that makes guests admire the artwork before taking a bite. The coordinated menu and plating will demonstrate the extra care you took into hosting such an exceptional event. For inspiration, check out our photos from these “wow factor” events at the Library of Congress, the National Cathedral, and the Renwick Gallery. Thanks to Hosts DC and Well Dunn Caterers for their remarkable contributions and designs. If you’re looking to give your guests a truly unique – maybe even once-in-a-lifetime – experience for your next event, this post was written for you! Only in DC can you plan your corporate dinner or organization’s cocktail hour at the many beautiful and architecturally unique embassies in the area. DC proudly exists as one of the most culturally diverse cities in the nations, and as home to almost 200 embassies, ambassador residences, and international centers in the area, it’s sure to be a great place to gain experience, perspective, and knowledge. Embassy Row sits along Massachusetts Avenue between 18thand 35thstreets where you’re sure to run into diplomats from Australia, Greece, Japan, Italy, and more. During the month of May, many embassies participated in Passport DC, opening their doors to tours and even hosting events such as concerts, lectures, cooking classes and more! You can contact a staff member for assistance [here] to get more information. We recently had the pleasure of photographing a spectacular cocktail reception held at the British Embassy. As usual, Capital City Events did a phenomenal job of designing and coordinating this lovely event. This particular embassy makes its home inside a beautiful red brick building surrounded by shade trees and greenery – plus it has a nice breezeway at the entrance for resting or catching some fresh air. Inside, we love the fresh, bright look of the white walls and sparkling chandeliers. The British Embassy offers plenty of open space to mix and mingle, and we love the large outdoor area and lawn in the back. It’s well lit by the stunning white-columned steps leading up to the building – perfect for entertaining. This evening was so much fun to attend and document (we learn something new every time) that we can’t wait to for the next embassy-themed event! But when guests are not in the event room itself, you’ll be pleased to know that the rest of the hotel is also on par with the ballroom’s level of luxury. The new lobby is the perfect blend of modern and classic. Golden accents, marble table tops, and neutral tones keep with the original style of the hotel while modern furniture, playful wall art, and succulent plants give it a fresh, fun look.
